You're right to want to use tampons. It makes that time of the month so much easier.

Ok -- start by buying the slenderest ones. They will be the easiest to insert. There will be instructions with diagrams inside, so look at those, because they should be useful. I'll give you instructions for Tampax tampons.

Unwrap the tampon and you see that it has two parts with the string coming out on the smaller end. Insert the *other* end into your vagina upto about 1/2 inch below the first part (will be about 2 or 2 1/2 inches). Press the part with the string on it, and it will push the tampon out of the first tube and into your vagina. Once you've pressed it in all the way, the tampon will be properly inserted.

Be sure to look through the instructions for the tampon that you end up buying. The diagrams are useful. Good luck!

Here's a website with some general instructions.

Hey there. :)

Using a tampone is pretty easy, when you start to use them. If you insert it right, you won't feel a thing. You just have to remember to take it out lol.

The best way that worked for me is by putting my right leg on the toilet, then pushing the tampon slowly in (you know where lol.) It's usually more comfortable when my leg is a little elevated. If it doesn't work (felt uncomfortable, painful) the first time, which didn't for me, try inserting it again, or simply use another tampon. Insert the pointier end up, and you usually have done it correctly when you've pushed it a cm up, out of sight. :) Remember that the string must hang out, or at least that you can reach it and pull it out when you have to change it, otherwise ... you may suffer the humiliation (you seem to think so) of telling your dad and going to a doctor lol. Also, I think the plastic kind are easier to insert and may be more comfortable, but they aren't as efficient as the cotton ones.

I usually only use tampons when I really want to go swimming, but don't want to bleed in the swimming pool n stuff... for sports other than ones that you would get wet, I'd recommend using pads instead.

With tampons it's easier to get the blood to cloak inside and dry there, and I've read before that it can cause infections. So when you use tampons, remember to change daily, like every two hours.

Using pads is easier because it actually allows the blood to leave your body. It's less risky. :) Which also means you don't have to change it as daily. n_n I have my period right now and I usually use 2-3 pads a day, at the beginning, then use like 1-2 when the blood lessens. It's a safe way to go, unless you were planning to swim or get soaked. =\ Hope that helped, see ya :)

P.S I forgot the most important part. Don't be worried about asking these kinds of things freely. It's not a crime or secret really. :P Most girls experience menstruation sooner or later. :P I'm fourteen and I've had this for two years. The first time I used a tampon was on holidays, my aunt noticed that I had my period, and I wasn't swimming because I had it, so I told her. She reacted nicely as she understood what I was going through, and kindly supplied me with tampons, so I could go swimming. :) When I asked him why it was so painful, and still so many women used it. My dad was the one that that told me to elevate my leg lol. He used to be a nurse/doctor. n_n

Don't feel weird. It's not like girls are just born with this knowledge just because they are girls. To answer you question, I do both. I do tampons mainly. At night I go with a pad. No, they don't hurt if done correctly.

Read the little paper instruction that comes with the tampons. It tells you about various things including how to use it.

When you go purchase them, go find and purchase ones with plastic applicators. They are easier to insert and don't cause as much discomfort for your first time. Playtex gentle glide and Tampax pearls are both good choices. You will need some time to find just the right absorbancy tampon for your flow. Start with the lite or regular absorbancy. As you go through your periods, you will know whether it is sufficient. Change them after 3-4 hours during the day. If you get leaks before that time or if the tampon is saturated when you remove them, then you might want to change to the next higher absorbancy. If when you remove them after 3-4 hours, they hurt and are still somewhat dry, then change to a lower absorbancy. Try not to leave them in for much longer than that and don't use higher absorbancy ones so you can leave them in longer without changing. That increases your risk for toxic shock syndrom. There's description of TSS in that pamphelet. Don't get excessively paranoid about it, but just be aware of it. Recognize the symptoms so if you suspect it, you know and can go to the doctor. It is rare, and you reduce your chance of it by changing tampons after a few hours.

As for insertion, the plastic kinds are easier. When you take one out, you will see that there's two tubes, a small one inside a larger one. Make sure the string is coming out the back of the smaller tube. When you push the small tube into the large tube, the actual tampon will come out. Try with one to see and understand how it works. Go to the bathroom. Wash your hands before you insert a new one. I've found a good position is to just put one foot on the toilet lid and point the knee out. Take a few breaths and relax. Hold a new tampon with your thumb and fingers on the grip and insert the large end into your vagina. You want to kind of point it toward the small of your back. There's pictures on all this in that little pamphlet too. You might need to try a couple of times before you find just the right direction so it doesn't poke at something. Relax and don't tense up. You will want to the tampon to be far enough beyond the muscles when it is inserted. Once your fingers on the grip is just about touching you and the large tube is all the way in, hold the grip firmly (but don't squish it otherwise the little tube won't go) and push the small tube in slowly until it's complete inside the big tube. Now make sure your fingers aren't pulling on the string and pull the tubes out. If you do it right, you should barely or not even feel the tampon inside you. If you feel it, it's probably because it didn't go in far enough past the muscles. Wrap the applicator in some toilet paper and throw it in the trash. Don't flush them.

After a few hours, change them. Again relax. Taking it out is just basically pulling on the string until it comes out, but you have to relax.

Yeah, they have the directions in the box. Try to get the ones with plastic applicator. I had to start using them at 10 (!) for sports. And I lived with my Dad, too, so I had to teach myself.
I started with and still use the Playtex regular ones. They go in pretty easy and are a bit smaller. If you stand on the floor and put one foot up on the toilet lid, it helps a bit. Be sure you hold your hand still until you're done, and try not be nervous. If you put it in, and doesn't feel right, just take it out and try again. You can always buy more.
Once you get the hang of it, you'll never want to wear a pad again. So much more comfortable.
Good luck, hope I helped.

Just buy a small box, read the instructions inside and try them out.

Start with the Slender size. Use a little Vaseline if you need it and just relax.

Remember to remove the applicator. Don't flush them no matter what the package says. Most plumbing systems can't handle them. don't leave it in more than 6-8 hours. Always use a mini pad with a tampon.

And never where white trousers. Trust me.

If you buy a pack of tampons it will have a leaflet inside which tells you how to put the tampon in. It does not hurt.

Ok. I hate tampons. I was TERRIFIED the first time I used one. I would suggest using a mirror to see where to put it. Then just put it up *there* and push it up. good luck!
