will come from it; examples being new elements, research on body tissue, etc.?

Robert Zubrin is an author of 'The case for Mars', and 'Entering Space'.
2020 may be too optimistic. Human can not conquer the long duration of staying in space yet.
The benefits will be many, and the research funding will be little.

People won't go to Mars any time soon. Probably not in my lifetime. I am pretty old, but if you are young, you MAY live to see it, but no guarantees.

There is nothing on Mars that we don't have on Earth, so new elements or whatever are not a reason to go. Basically, there is no real pressing need to go, at least not now. It would just be really cool if we did.

We are able, now, to go to Mars. We lack the initiative to spend the money to use present day technology.
As President Kennedy said, quoting a mountain climber, "Because it is there." as regards to going to the moon. Mars is there and it is a planet with an atmosphere that has potential to be modified eventually to support human life.
The benefits are staggering. We would have an alternative to Earth for our descendants. New technology would be developed benefiting all, and an unknown quantity of raw materials could be tapped for our future needs.

anytime, so long as we have a sugardaddy who could finance the construction of a rocketship, getting volunteers to manned the ship (I will be the first to volunteer), stock-up enough food and fuel. If we could make this a success, then subsequent travel to Mars would follow.

FIrst, you'd need a LOT of money - didn't it cost some singer millions just to take a trip to the moon?

Anyway, next you'd need to be really young - because it would take you a LONG time to get there.

I dont know when, can't wait though. I think it would be amazing we could start a whole new life from scratch with no pollution or problems...but I mean there could be new things that are dangerous and we would not know about.
