The Outback does get very hot, but since the Middle East is closer to the equator, it makes sense that it averages much higher temps.
The highest recorded air temperature was, I believe, something like 134 degrees in Libya.
I say "air temperature" because I believe that the surface of, and a few centimeters above sun-baked desert sand easily exceeds that.

The Middle East is hotter, but not by too much.

The US has hit 57 degrees C in California (Death Valley I think), just shy of the 58 at Libya.
