We're trying to install a new HD into my brother's PC, but there is a problem. The wires that connected his old HD to the computer itself look like this:

... but the HD output is this:

In case you can't see it, it basically is a rectangle.

The old one had an output like this:

And in case you can't see that, it's basically a load of pins in 2 rows.

How can I fit the new one?

Is there any such thing as a 'converter', ie from IDE to SATA?

You have a SATA drive and an IDE MB.

There's hope, though, just get a SATA controller and it will come with the PCI card and SATA cables to complete the process.

Best Buy, Circuit City or your local computer shop should have them. also, you can get one mail-order for around $15, delivered, for the basic model and more, of course for those supporting RAID, etc.

At this point I'd recommend the least expensive controller card.

Unfortunately, I can't see the 2nd and 3rd photos well; but from what I can gather:

Your "old" HD was a EIDE drive ( extended IDE ). That's the grey connector with the 2 rows of pins in the first photo.

From what I can tell, it appears that your new hard drive may be a SATA drive ( serial ATA ). Look at the box and/or user guide to see if your drive is EIDE or SATA.

If it is a SATA drive, it is not compatible. Return the HD and exchange it for a EIDE drive.

This is all conjecture, based on my interpretation of the photos. Please get confirmation from the store you bought the new HD from.

I can't really see your rectangle real well.

The harddrive with the cable that have rectangle are more likely a SCSI or SATA type harddrive.

You must have bought the wrong harddrive type.

You can either return it or get a SCSI or SATA PCI card that can converts the slot into SCSI or SATA connection.

The old drive is an IDE connection, big flat grey ribbon cable and the new one is a SATA connection. Unless the motherboard has a SATA input, and you have the correct cables it simply won't work.

I can't really see it, but it sounds like you got a SATA hard drive instead of an IDE drive.
