I don't think there's really a "good time" to start buying baby items. You can start now if you want.
Are you having a baby shower?-- if so, try not to buy too much. Personally, I received practically everything that I had on my baby registry ( I have a big family). I also received plenty of clothes.
Don't overdo it-- however, you do want to be ready for the baby:)
Congrats!!

You should pick, or have picked, some of the big items by now. I'd recommend a crib. If you are going to just buy one off the shelf, then you can wait a bit, but if you want one from a big baby store they'll probably have to order it from the factory. Same goes for a big chair, if you want one for nursing (note: we got a big rocker but wife never used it, oh well). Other big ticket things like a stroller/car seat should also be considered now.
Some things you can get from friends and family, with a couple exceptions: a) crib mattress. It's good to get a new FIRM crib mattress that hasn't been used before. It's a very important item and safety is paramount. Car seats are another, sort of. Some say it is fine to share an infant seat, but others say the advancements made every few years mean it is best to have the latest model.
If you have a shower planned, then you can hold off on the little things (should hold off to give everyone a full range of items to buy).
The nursery work should be done soon--painting, etc. If you want a new digital camera or camcorder for the event, I'd wait until the last minute to get the latest and greatest.
But what others said about bed rest or complications is a very real thing--you could get locked up for a month at the end when you were planning on shopping. Get going on it now and you won't feel as overwhelmed (and can actually enjoy the process).

I started buying about 4 months along. And just bought a little bit here and there that way i wouldn't be overwhelmed towards the end with having to rush around and get everything. Plus it was financially easier to buy a little bit at a time instead of blowing a couple thousand bucks all at once. Congratulations and good luck!

I'd say whenever you feel like starting!!! I'm almost 18 weeks and I've been buying for the past few weeks. Its my first baby, so I'm really excited and its hard to resist. I don't know what I'm having yet, so I'm just sticking to neutral stuff until I find out. And only buying the basics like onsies, recieving blankets, a few bottles, etc. If you feel like buying... by all means... have a blast!!!!

I would suggest that you begin buying the big items (things that you won't expect your friends/family to get you for shower gifts- like the big furniture). You don't want to hold off on buying baby stuff too late because it can be mind wrenching... for example, you've got a 101 cribs to chose from with various features- that alone took me a whole week to decide on!!! I'm relieved to have that purchased and all assembled! I couldn't imagine putting that off any longer than I had to!
Also, we are relieved to know that, as of now, we have all the bare necessities for baby for the first week. I'm all set...even if I have to go on bed rest, I won't have to worry about having my baby stuff purchased and ready to go!
Good luck!!! :-) congrats!

When you know what the gender of the baby is so if its a boy,you don't buy pink and if its a girl, you don't buy black. You should start buying teddy bears,a crib, and a stroller for now. Don't forget a baby seat for the car!!! Remember to put up the pens thingys so the baby doesn't escape and go places they aren't supposed to go.

Once you know if its a boy or girl you can start buying clothes. But as far as diapers, by all means start asap. Go to costco or sams club. Cheapest place to buy. You can never buy too many. And you can also start getting all the lotion and balmex and shampoo, receiving blankets...etc. If you wait till the last minute you are going to be broke! LOL. Have fun.

We started buying diapers and wipes early (through talking to other moms we estimated how many of each size to buy).
If you're having a shower, you may want to wait until after your shower to buy the things you didn't receive, and researching early will help you decided what items you'd like to register for.
After we found out what we were having, I bought clothes that were on clearance in the size that would be right when that season came around again (my son who's now 3 has clothes up to size 6 in his closet, and our daughter who is 3 months has clothes up to 2T).

I started around 3 to 4 months into my pregnancy. I suggest you also check out http://babytobee.excellentabc.com . They were a big help in finding out which products to buy. I got a lot of free samples and coupons too so I was able to save money.
Hope this helps you.
Congrats on your baby Girl!!
