Musicians don't like being called Performers, but Performers like being called Musicians. You can be both, as most Rock, or Country bands. Punk bands are mainly performers, not musicians, for the most part. Most rap/hip hop is performance... No real knowledge of music is necessary. But punk and rap can be exciting and entertaining.

A musician is skilled at playing music on an intrument, could include the voice. A performer is one who puts on an exciting show. Like the pop stars who lip-sync on stage are performing, not being musicians. A lot of times I think the singer is called a performer and the musicians are the band behind him/her.
