It's hard to tell the difference if you don't have a confirmed pregnancy. In fact, most early miscarriages are undetected because the woman thinks she is simply having a heavy period. If you were a little further along, your "period" would include some clotty tissue and possibly labor-like contractions (as mine did--I was 7.5 weeks when I lost mine).

You can take a pregnancy test if you're unsure--you'll still probably have detectable HCG (the hormone detected by pregnancy tests which is made by the placenta) if you're unsure and really feel the need to know.

You can only consider a painful period when pregnancy is ruled out. So if you have already determined that you are not pregnant by Dr. or home pregnancy test, then it would be safe to assume it is a painful period. But, if you have concerns, see your Dr. if a pregnancy exists. Good luck.

If you are not sure if you were already pregnant, you can take a test. The levels of hcg may still be in your system.
