A threat is just that until the person threatening DOES something. Depending on what the person does, it could mean a stay in jail overnight for first time offenders. People with a history of assault, whether it's the same type or whether it takes a different form, face prison. Either way, don't allow this person to go unnoticed--whether they only threaten or not, the threat, regardless of what type, COULD become a reality and cost someone their life. Let law enforcement know...especially if he does something to you or to someone you know.

Assuming he doesn't have a record for battery, a misdemeanor assault gets you held until someone bails you out. You get a court date, maybe a fine, perhaps a restraining order, and probation...a wrist slap.
It might be easier to find someone who'll "call him" on his threats and beat his ***.

Some states have "criminal threatening" laws on the books, you may be able to press charges if you have proof.
