U (unclassified/ungraded) is given when a candidate fails to achieve the necessary mark for a higher grade. This is not necessarily a G grade. In maths GCSE for example (WJEC board) there are 3 tiers (soon to change though)
Possible grades:-
Higher tier...A*, A, B, C, U.
Intermediate tier..B, C, D, E, U.
Lower tier...D, E, F, G, U.

If someone was to try the higher tier and get say 12% which is not enough for a C,they would not get a D but only a U..this shows the importance of sitting the correct paper.

This grade is given to pupils who havent proved clever or able enough to improve the examiner to get a grade in an exam...it stands for Unclassified or sometimes Ungraded and is at the bottom of the possible grades at both GCSE and A Level...at GCSE you can gain A* A B C D E F G U at As and A level you can gain A B C D E F U......

U can do better....Goodluck

U stands for undraded. Either the work is so bad the examiner cant even give it a grade or but this is rare the examiner couldnt be bothered to mark it. You with know if it is the latter as is most likely a group of people you know have ungraded who where in the same examination doing the same exam.

I believe a "U" is used when a course is taken like a Pass/Fail. In looking around the web, there are a number of college sites that reference grades of "S-U" and "U". If a course was taken without the desire for a letter grade (Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory), the "U" would likely indicate the course requirements were not met, but the student was not taking it for a letter grade (which would affect his/her GPA)

U is a ungraded.
F is technically a *** but employers look for c's and above. A U means you have fallen of the marking scheme and this is the worst possible grade ever.
