Coming out of the closet can ruin an actor's career, especially if he's not established himself yet. A good-looking actor doesn't want to ruin his chances of getting a leading role. Unfortunately, we're not at a point where audiences can believe or accept a gay man playing a straight role, and a gay actor doesn't want to limit himself to only playing gay roles. A straight man can play a gay role, but for many years, you wouldn't even see that. It was way too risky for a straight actor to even play the role of a gay man. There's one big word to explain all of this: HOMOPHOBIA

went to the oscars with his boyfriend.
It was really cool, considering he probably paved the way for tom cruise and Leonardo DeCaprio to come out of the closet too.
