It depends....what kind of physical shape are you in? Running is certaintly a faster way to burn calories, lose weight, etc. but it has to be done in moderation. If you are a beginner, running a bit with walking to rest is a good way to start. However if you're severely out of shape, walking is a good way to get into running. By working up your milage (i.e. walk 1 mile a day for a week, try 1 1/2 the next week each day or every other day- what have you) you can eventually get your body in good enough condition that it can 'handle' running. Starting off with running with no training will indeed cause injuries and will really depress you if your goal is to be more fit!
Some peoples bodies can't handle running- my husband for one, is tall, very fit (he rides his bike every day) but running kills his knees and back. In this case he just finds an alternative; cycling. I, on the other hand, can't get enough running in! I am still running and I am pregnant- of course not as much but I love the way it makes me feel; refreshed and energized.
If you are looking to begin running, the magazine Runner's World usually has great articles on those beginning to run. Plus, if you get into running, road races are a lot of fun to do and you can meet a lot of people at all different levels of ability.
My suggestion would be to really listen to your body and start off slow. Like I said, running is a higher endurance activity that will burn more calories but if you are not physically fit, you really have to be careful and work into it.

Running is far better than walking if you have just withdrawn money from an ATM at night, and notice a few very focused homeless gentlemen rapidly wanting to ask you a question.
Otherwise, walking, (particularly brisk walking), is much more enjoyable and less traumatic on your joints.
Its benefits are the same, if you cover the same distance, too.

It can be. Any exercise is good for you but it all comes down to the amount you do to determin which ones better. For example if you walk three miles and run a lap around a track, walking would be better. Hope that helped. :]

Walking is better than running as long as you walk for at least 15 mins. It is better to walk because it builds metabolism.

No, running is good if the body is in good shape. If you have knee problems or some other problems walking is better, So it really depends on the body that is doing it.

For what purpose? Running is a high-impact form of exercise, and it is hard on your feet, knees and hip joints. It will get you where you're going faster than walking, however.
