Lent is not really a holiday, it's more a time of preperation in the Christian faith (not just Catholic, as someone mentioned) for the Holy Week (especially Easter). Most people don't actually fast for Lent. They either give something up or take on some poitive action (more volunteer work, etc.) Here are some things that Wikipedia says that might help.

Lent is the period (or season) from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday. always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25, roughly corresponding to early spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Ash Wednesday, which may fall anywhere between February 4 and March 10, occurs forty-six days before Easter, but Lent is nevertheless considered to be forty days long, due to the fact that Sundays in this season are not counted among the days of Lent. The traditional reason for this is that fasting was considered inappropriate on Sunday, the day commemorating the Resurrection of Jesus.

Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, while Lent is a time of preparation for Holy Week. Holy Week recalls the events preceding and during the crucifixion, which occurred in the Jerusalem of the Roman province Judea, circa AD 30.

Hope that helps!

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (where people of the Catholic faith attend mass and reaffirm their commitment to turn away from sin). This act is signified by the priest or clergyman marking the forehead with ashes in the sign of the cross. Lent ends on Easter Sunday. People of the Catholic faith abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent to show respect for the day Christ died and sacrificed his flesh on the Cross.

By the way...being a true Catholic is NOT all about money...TITHING is a part of being a Christian, period. Like most religons, the Catholic faith is very misunderstood.

Lent is not a holiday! What's with you Americans turning everything into a holiday. Lent is the40 days leading up to Good Friday, whereby, you are sxpected to give up something you like in order to sacrifice for god the way Jesus did for you. If you are Christian you are supposed to know this. If you don't, you might look into going to a real church instead of one where they focus on money.
EDIT: by the way, it starts on Ash Wednesday which is theday after Mardi Gras. which stands for fat Tuesday, or Shrove tuesday, theday generally called pancake day because that is the last day you are supposed to eat milk, eggs, and fat until Easter. This year lent starts on feb28th

Lent is not a holiday...it is period of time (40 days) that occurs between Ash Weds and Holy Saturday when people of the Catholic faith prepare for Easter by either giving up something or doing something extra (i.e. -'giving up candy or smoking' or 'volunteering at the soup kitchen once a week, or going to Mass daily') in order to spiritually prepare themselves to celebrate what is considered the holiest day of year...Easter.

Before easter,
there will be a "fat tuesday"
you eat................ a lot, because the next day is fasting wednesday.... you starve yourself.

And that mark the start of Lent.
Lent is where you give something, anything. ( a habbit, a luxery....

or you make a resolution ( I will pray every day, I will be more accepting)

But you only have to do that untill easter sunday...

You only have to be good untill the bunny gives you eggs
