no goldfish don't need hot water, they are a cooler water fish, basically 65-70 degrees(maybe even less). Bettas come from hot tropical water and I have experienced the death of one too because my water wasn't warm enough, their water has to be atleast 70 degrees. Check the site I listed below and click on whatever type of goldfish you have and it will give you all the facts on it, including water temperature.

Gold Fish do best in water that is between 68 and 70 degrees.
But a 10 gallon tank is only big enough for 1 gold fish, contrary to popular belief Gold fish do not stop growing depending on the size of there tank.

Goldfish do not need warm water but you could only have 1 baby fancy in there for a few months then you will need to upgrade to at least a 20 gallon for that one fish.

Gold fish are cold water fish and you will not need to purchase a heater. But please only put one fish in the 10 gallon tank and that is all. You will have to clean it more as the fish grows. Also if you put some live plants in the tank the plants will help with Oxygen

I know people in Alaska who have gold fish in thier back yard ponds. They actually breath in a bubble to survive freezing in the winter. Then in the spring, when the ice melts, they swim arround as usual. Gold fish are carp and can get pretty big. That's why you don't want more than one in a 10 gallon tank.

Gold fish can handle colder water than a beta. Be aware that they are a bit dirtier than other fish so you will need to change them more often, but they sure are pretty. Get some of those big pretty ones, and some of the black ones too.

you could think about getting mountain minnows or some other small coldwater fish, then you can have a small shoal and not worry about them outgrowing the tank.
