well im not really talking about the movie since the movie was BS. but the so called legend... is it true?

I doubt that was true. There is a story about a similar incident that allegedly took place in Alabama. I can't say that one is true, but the similarities between the movie and the Alabama incident are quite interesting.

The legend itself was made up for the movie. So neither it nor the story behind it are true in any way.

It was based on a true fable about a ficticious witch who lives in an actual make-believe forest which never existed about 25 years ago. If you don't believe me you can go to this imaginary web site which shall remain anonymous for obvious reasons...

Nobody knows. It's up to you if you want to believe it or not. Like most myths and legends, no one can say for sure. -_- Not a very satisfactory answer, I know.
