Separate shops will usually have better prices and sometimes a better selection. However, if something goes wrong with it (something breaks, or isn't adjusted right or the board/botts/bindings don't fit right) you are out of luck once you get to the resort. If you are just renting equipment then resorts will probably be more expensive. But, if you plan on getting lift tickets and lessons, then most resorts offer everything included packages that end up being cheaper. Also, many resorts have high-end demo's available to rent and most allow you to try many boards for the same price. If you are in the market for a new board this can be a great way to test out a bunch of different set ups. Rent from a local shop and you're stuck with it for your entire trip. There probably will be long lines over the weekends but do your best to get there earlier and you shouldn't have any issues

Not only are the lines terribly long at the resort, but the boards they rent out are usually lower end equipment. I don't know about your town, but around here a board rental package will usually run $40 or more for one day. The snowboard shop in my town will let you have the board all day (two if you rent it on a Friday night and the shop is closed Sunday) and the equipment is a little better for around $25. If you liked the first snowboarding trip and think you will go at least three more times, buy a board. Don't cheap out and continue to rent because it will cost more in the long run. You can probably purchase the board you rented at a discount price.

I agree with all the positive aspects that Irish Eyes listed about renting at a local shop instead of at the mountain. I generally do see VERY VERY long lines waiting for the rentals.
A positive to renting at the mountain that I wanted to add was that you don't have to transport the board to the mountain. Depending on the number of people you have going and what the car situation is you may not have room for them in your car.
Good luck!

Separate shop off the mountain. But find a good shop with some real geeks that know what they are doing. Your set-up on the board is as important as the gear you use. The shop geeks will ask the right questions to get you in the right gear because they want you to: Have fun, get into the sport and buy your gear with them. They are motivated to get you in the right equipment. at the resort they just process the cattle and you are on your own. Plan on about 30 to get your deck picked out and set-up.

I would say if the factor here is time and convenience, then rent at the mountain.
If you want to try to save a bit a money, possibly shorter lines and better selection, then go to a seperate shops. But I did find at times seperate shops have crappy boards. It depends. I don't know how it is now days I have my own board lol

At a separate shop:
1) it's usually cheaper
2) they have better selections and better service
3) the lines are shorter
The only drawback is that some of them will hit your credit card for about $200 per set of skis or snowboard and won't credit it back until the next day.

Shops off the mountain always have better gear without as much wear and tear, and the price is usually about the same I think.

It better to get a snowboard at a seperate shop. That way you can snowboard whenever you want.

to be totally honest the rentals at the mountain are crap and they are soooooooooo beat up. Its worth finding a place off the resort because they are cheaper and have really nice equipment usually.
