The area (square inches) is simply length X width.

Height is only needed if you are measuring volume. In that case, it's Length X Width X Height.

Are you looking for surface area or cubic area there is a difference. Surface area you do as you would any surface area calculation. Measure the length and width of the sides of a given suface and multiply for you answer. Do this for each face of the inside of the box and add the amounts to get a sum of X"sq. To measure the cubic volume measure height X width X length and arrive at the total for that formula as well.

I'm assuming you want the surface area (since you asked for square inches) of a box with dimensions length width and height: l, w, and h.

Box with a Top:
2*w*h + 2*l*h + 2*w*l

Box without a Top:
2*w*h + 2*l*h + w*l

If the width is W, the length L, and the height H, the inside area is 2(W*L + W*H + L*H).

l X w = P (perimeter) in square inches
l X w X h = A (area) in cubic inches

Area is measure in square terms on plane/flat surfaces,
otherwise, three dimensional (length, width, and height) Area
is in cubic terms.

square inches (area): width times length
if you want volume, then cubic inches: width times length times height.
