sure sounds as if many people have not worked in different jobs, or dealt with maternity leave.
The benefits that you may be entitled to, all fall under the policies of your specific employer.. nothing to do with NYC. In other words, I don't think it is a legal requirement related to where you live, but up to whoever you work for. I am aware of family medical leave being legislated, but not in terms of being paid. And.. I suspect that it is not across the board for all Federal employess, but your specific branch.
Sure seems as if disability may include maternity leave. But it is likely that you need to use other benefits ie vacation time, so forth first.
Good luck, and enjoy new baby.

Why should your employer have to pay you not to work??? Your employer didn't have a say in you having a baby, thus you should not have to be paid on maternity leave. You are not "entitled" to anything. You knew you were going to have a baby, you should have been saving during that time.

If your employer grants you these things, great...you have an awesome employer, but if not, you shouldn't be suprised.

I believe that federal law states that you get six weeks unpaid with the promise of having a comperable job when you get back.

not sure about in NY or with the govt job, but at my employer you get your EFML and it's not paid but they have to hold your job for you. Our benefits also state part of your time off is considered a short-term disability and you get partial pay.

Go to your HR person and find out what your specifics are.

Disability for having a baby? No.

If your company is large enough that they fall under the laws governing company insurance, then you are allowed 6 weeks of paid leave, usually through the insurance company. If your company is small (such as a small business owner), they are not even required to give you paid sick leave.

The family medical leave act will allow you up to 6 months of unpaid leave, wherin you can return to work. However, I'm not sure if small business owners are subject to this.

I believe you are only allowed twelve weeks of family leave, but you will only get paid if you have accrued sick time and vacation time. The employer does not have to pay you for this time. They are only obligated to give you the time off.If you have disability insurance you would have to check out how many weeksthe insurance company will cover you.Good luck.
