I consider myself to be of average intelligence. But, a lot of times I do wacky stuff out of forgetfulness, and many people like to tell me that I have no common sense. Could this be genetic, or am I just not using my whole brain? What causes a lack of common sense?

You don't say how old you are, but when you are young you tend not to have a lot of common sense. I think it's something you learn and that takes time....but then I know grown adults who never seem to grow up. What I want to know is what causes forgetfullness? Why do we forget things? But the key here is you are aware of it. So start thinking about what you do. Slow down if you have to. See if you can consentrate on the outcome of your action, before you do it.

Common Sense is not common at all. It's very rare. Don't know why the called it that in the first place...:) The best way I can describe it is being practical. To avoid being impractical you need to think before you act or speak - as a result, making good (practical) decisions. In order to do this, you've got to be able to way the pros and cons using verly little time - it takes practice and confidence in yourself. so practice, practice, practice!!

Common sense is a waste of time. Just go with your gut. You may get in more trouble, have more adventures, and be uncomfortable, but it will always be a far more exciting ride when you look back. If you do what those around you do, you will have what those around you have. If you want to be more, do more. Why be plain when you can be crunchy? ;P (sorry, I couldn't resist that last line...)

Could be:

Living a fast paced life...stress

No attention to detail which can be practiced and learned

People allow themselves to become consumed by addictions that do not allow people to focus

Lack of wisdom sometimes due to age

Lack of sleep

etc

For some people these would be left as excuses others choose to find solutions.

Common sense is not common enough. Experience and making your share of mistakes will build up a stockpile of common sense. But, that doesn't ensure your making use of it, unless you think before you act.

Sounds like you don't always think things through, that you're a spur-of-the moment kind of person.

You're not being stupid, you're just being human. Even the 99th percentile act reckless every now and again.
