No. The DS plays games from the Game Boy Advance, but not the older Game Boy or Game Boy Color.

The Game Boy Advance does play the older games, however, so it might be worth picking one of them up. They are cheaper now, since they are older.

Everyone's answer so far is incorrect(bar one(JONE) who for some stupid reason got two thumbs down!?!?!!?)..

Trust me!
YES!!!

There is(/are) Gameboy / gameboy color emulators for the DS (/Lite) all you need is some devices to enable it. Check out www.gamersection.ca ... they have good value. you will most likely be looking for a flash cart(supercard are a good brand) that goes in the GBA slot and a pass that goes in the DS game slot, Superkey is the pass make that i'd recommend. (Supercard&superkey combos are available on gamersection.) There are newer solutions that only go into the DS slot. With most of these you will also need a mini/micro SD card.. up to 2 gigs is supported at the moment as far as i know.
With these(supercard&superkey for example) you'll be able to play DS roms (legally backed up of course ;)!!) , most are compatible with GBA roms (rumble supercards are not) , and most/all allow you to run other homebrew(doom, movieplayers, mp3 player software, pang, many many others, and emus) there are emulators for old things mostly, like nes, snes(not full speed on all roms) , GAMEBOYCLASSIC/COLOUR... and some others.
the actual gameboy cartridges are useless, you can just download them from many sites, and if you have them already then i'm technically aloud to tell you these rom sites.. my favourite is rom-nation.com ....but there are many with pretty much all GBC games released... just download them , put them on theSD card and boot up the emulator.

In summary: YES!!!!
Cost: around $60(cheapest) to >100 for flashcart&Passkey combo... and $30 for a 1/2 gig memory card..(depending on where u get it!)
