I hadn't considered Strange Fruit as traditional, but I do love that song, in a sad way...I remember being shocked when I figured out the meaning of the lyrics when I was little. I knew that there was something going on in the song that I was missing given the amazing and moving way that Billie sang it....but I can never listen to that song and be unmoved

I think Greensleeves and Auld Lang Syne are great choices. I'd also like to throw out "Moon River" and "What is a Youth" (In Zefirelli's Romeo and Juliet) as possibilities. But for my personal favourite traditional, and another movie classic, I have to go with "As Time Goes By"....never sung better than by Dooley Wilson ("Sam").

I was going to say "I Know It's Over" by The Smiths but this was from less than 30 years ago so instead I will say "When I Was On Horseback" which is a traditional folk song from the medieval period about a person's body arriving for their funeral.

That song that was redone not to long ago. It says "Oh where oh where could my baby be. The lord took her away from me". I'll try to find more info on that one to be more specific, but maybe this will help for now.

I agree with Greensleeves.
But Amazing Grace gets a vote, too. Yes, it's uplifting... in an entirely depressing, tear-inducing kind of way.
