Where are you coming from? Where ever it is, stay there! Every one here is from the Mid-west. Most people consider the Mid-west nice and polite. And it is, until they move here. Everyone here is rude and angry and in a ruch. I am from Chicago and people are far friendlier there.
It is easy to get around here. Roads are N-S, E-W, "streets" on the eastside, "avenues" on the west. Job are hard to find and the pay is lousy because there are more people here than jobs, so employers can be choosey. Don't be surprised if you need a P/T job to makes ends meet.
I want out out here, except I love the weather and the heat. Other than than, it is an ugly 2-bit city who dreams of being big-time, but it will always be just a 2-bit hick town.

There must be a good reason why so many people have recently moved to Phoenix metropolitan area. Yes its hot in the summer and it rarely rains but you don't have to speak Spanish to live in the metropolitan area. The city of Phoenix itself is a bit hard to swallow but the East Valley (Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert) is more than tolerable. These are areas that are growing very fast. Demographically the city of Gilbert has a highly educated, middle class population. Crime is relatively low and most facilities, hospitals, fire stations, numerous shopping centers, are less than 5 years old. The future is in Gilbert. The city planners are doing an excellent job balancing goo gobs of new housing developments with new parks and recreational areas. The town was the fastest growing city with 100,00 plus population in the US in 2004-5. Check out the city of Gilbert website to find out what's up. This is not a bad place to live even if they have a haboob (intense, blinding miles long, and several feet high sandstorms) every once in a while.
Must be a reason why this place will surpass Florida as a winter vacation spot. Jobs are not that hard to come by. The jobless rate is lower than the national average although salaries have not caught up with the 50% increase in the price of new housing that has escalated over the last 4 years or so. There may be better places to live around the country but not for the price.

Hi, let me first say "welcome to Arizona." I've lived here for...well, i'll just say well over 20 years. I was born and raised here. I've lived other places, but always come home. I think the Phoenix area (not specifically Phoenix) is great! Sure, it's hot in the summer. You have air conditioning in your homes and cars, for that. Things are very easy to find. I live east of Phoenix in what's called the east valley (Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa). Things out here are new. Shopping is plentiful, and dining includes everything from fast food to five star.
We have an excellent job market too. As with most places, the friendliness of residents depends on the area. There are probably some places in the City of Phoenix that might be considered "unfriendly" but here in Gilbert, the people are very friendly.
Again, welcome!

I have lived in Phoenix for 20 years and NOT ONCE have I ever had to speak Spanish in order for me to be able to do my job, to go shopping, to get directions or any of the other multitudes of things that a I do on a any given day. This is a big and beautiful city with many, many opportunities. There are lots of available jobs depending on your qualifications. The city is also very easy to get around in, once your know east from west and north from south you can get anywhere. Summer is hot, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but 120 it is not. Most of the summer we are between 105 and 110 and it will slide up and down to 112-115 a few days in the middle of the summer. If you are from cold country you know that you spend your winters inside mostly doing inside things, here it is the opposite in the summer you stay inside, you shop inside malls, you go to swim parks where it is always cooler (just use tons of sunscreen) and you never travel out in the desert without proper clothing and water. The only real issue with Phoenix is their inability to keep up with building roads for all the people that keep moving here. Try and rent until you find a job, so that you don't have to commute too far, that way you can avoid the freeways...never a fun place to be. Are people friendly... I say, "Welcome to Phoenix....enjoy the desert." People are friendly here, I can't imagine where all these people live that they say people aren't friendly. You get what you give, I always smile and say hello to people as I'm going around and I always receive nice responses...so give it a chance.

Yes I've lived in Phoenix for many many years!! Yes Phoenix is still one of the fastest growing cities in the US and is experienceing extream growing pains!!! It seems that no matter what street you go on there is "ROAD CONSTUCTION" the Trasportation system (bus) is freking lousy and NO it is not easy to find things!! The people are not as friendly as other cities I've been to or lived in but are for the most part helpful!! I have to be honest though -- if you don't speak spanish you'll find it a bit difficult at times communicating (65% of phoenix is Hispanic)!! Females receive more help than most guys!? I will say that just about anything you want you can find in Phoenix!! If you like bars, we have every kind you can think of (straight, country, gay, etc) resteraunt are the same (Mexican, Italian, French, Viet nam, Etc)!! If you enjoy sex shops we have them all over too!! We have single clubs and swinger clubs, we have just about anything you might want!!! So if you don't mind 120 degree temps and no seasons You will love Phoenix!!! Oh I forgot they say it's a "DRY HEAT" but anyway you look at it 120 is freaking hot as hell!!! LOL

I've lived in phoenix for nearly 10 years. With a metro population of around 3 million, it's incredibly easy to get around. The city was actually planned (go figure) and laid out on a grid. For the most part, the major streets run N/S and E/W. The exception is Grand Ave, which runs diagonally.
Since phoenix is really a young city, most people are not native. It's really a melting pot of folks from all over the country and the world. Nicely diverse. Many communities are gated, though, with walls surrounding the back yards of each individual home. Sadly, this means we are mostly on "waving" terms with our neighbors rather than "speaking" terms. I guess you get out of it what you put into it.
Jobs...like anywhere, it just depends on what you do. The service industry is booming, though, so if that's your "thing" you'll do just fine.

FYI, I don't speak Spanish and I've NEVER had a problem.
