We have gone to a 90/10 concept. Homework will only be 10% of the total grade. The other 90% has to be directly from tests and other things that actually demonstrate that the student has learned. The kids have to do their homework for practicing so that they do well enough on the tests. Most kids want to do well so they are working harder.

As for the graduation tests, etc. we have all gotten a very positive attitude with it and are very encouraging. We bring in breakfast on the testing mornings and encourage the kids as much as we can. They appreciate that we are feeding them and take the test seriously. We asked them; PLEASE take this test as seriously as you can. It reflects back on the teachers and the job that we have done to teach you. They did.

As for the breakfast; I did not spend a lot. I bought a gallon of fruit drink and some store brand cookies. While it may not be the healthiest thing, I could afford to do it for a week straight and the kids hopefully ate something else at home. Then, just before the test they could fill up a little more. A couple times the kids said "Wow thanks so much; I did not have time for breakfast today!" Having food in your belly helps you to do better when taking tests.
