I am writing an essay on the play Inherit the Wind but I am stuck and don't know where to start. It is on how the three themes ( 1st Amendment freedom of speech, evolutionist v. creationist debate, rachel and bert cates lives being affected) are intertwined, and explaining the importance of the themes through character and conflict analysis.

I have to write 4 paragraphs and I don't know how to organize them or how to start....please give me some IDEAS....i'm sooo stressed as this is a very important essay....thank you so much

Four paragraphs huh? hardly seems enough space to do it justice...
Start with the characters and how 1st ammendment, evolutionist debate affect them.
Then go to the conflict analysis and explain how the characters dealt with that.
I think what your instructor (teacher) is trying to get you to prove is how the characters were changed with the issues (1st ammend. and evolution) and how they dealt with it in their own lives.
A good thesis statement would be a great place to start--sometimes those come after you have written your paper though.
Start by writing what you know about the play...plot analysis and some important scenes you found--just get it down.
Then start to form your argument citing examples from the text itself.
For your first draft don't worry too much about the structure or organization. Just get something down you can go back and edit.
Wait until you have it all written out before you worry about your thesis statement or your introduction paragraph (you can't introduce something you haven't written yet.)

Make the introduction something like:

Our first Amendment is Freedom of Speech. Had it not been made, it could have been considered illegal for this essay to even be written. Then start each paragraph with a main idea, then two quotes from the book in each paragraph. Then rephrase your first sentence as your last sentence in each paragraph. Good luck!

The best way to tackle any essay is to just write and sort it out later. The very word Essay actually means "to try" so that's what you've got to do. Don't sweat the details or how to arrange it beforehand, writing is only about 10% of actual writing the other 90% is editing.

Try this site...http://www.sparknotes.com/drama/inheritwind/

It will tell you different scenes in the play, just highlight what is important that you need to know, for every scene, the key notes. Make a heading for each scene/themes, and then write something about them all under the category. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Write about what you felt throughout the play e.g. I was in tears when he died. Or you can just make that up.
