Small Steps, by Louis Sachar is good, but the book he wrote before this that includes two of these characters is even better, Holes. It's a great read at any age.
I'm currently reading The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, it's very good.
Some books I have loved: Anything by Carl Hiaasen, anything by Andrew Clements (YA and juvenile), Most of John Irving's books, Kurt Vonnegut's earlier books, Six of One, by Rita Mae Brown.
Some interesting and very readable nonfiction would be, The Truth, With Jokes, by Al Franken, Imperial Life in the Emerald City, by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, Conservatives Without Conscience, by John Dean, and Love my Rifle More than You, by Kayla Williams. Enjoy!

Cry to heaven by Anne Rice....Spartacus by Howard Fast(outlawed during the Mccarthy era).....The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, who also wrote the Three Musketeers & The man in the iron mask.....The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough...brilliant book.....The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (An amazing classic) & The Good Earth by Pearl Buck, lastly A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by betty Smith.
There, many classics and page turners for you!!! I have read all of these and in some cases multiple times!!! I really hope that this helps you!!! Spartacus will blow your mind. It had to be released in England as the McCarthy era had Howard fast black balled when it was written.
I hope that you read Cry to heaven by Anne Rice...it is NOT about vampires, but about the Italian Castrati, thus it is truth intermixed with fiction, rather historical fiction....
Happy reading!!!!! I gave y usome of my top faves here!!
Thanks,
Lioncourt

sci-fi, Nancy Kress' trilogy starting with "Beggars in Spain". This is not hard science-more about people... You will read more SF after these and 20 years from now they will be classics. On a totally different track, Edith Wharton-early 1900's, wicked sense of humor (short stories), have a dictionary handy-classic novels like "Ethan Frome" and "The Buccaneers".

The suggestions you got are great but you have to read "A Pale Horse" and Run Baby Run by Nicky Cruz. I don't know the name of the author to A Pale Horse but it's great.
