I think that may play a small role; however, anorexia is an eating disorder. It is catagorized with bulimia and over eating. These disorders are more about control than what society says they should look like. The people who are afflicted with eating disorders are trying to control things in their lives. If they can't control those things then they sometimes control what they can and that is what and how much food they eat and how their bodies look.

Yes, the fashion industry, the media and advertising can all trigger off eating disorders.

External factors are not the cause, but they can be a major factor that pushes someone over the edge and allows an eating disorder to develop. Also remember, it's not just females who suffer, increasing numbers of men suffer too.

I think the media in gen. is responsible. One can hardly turn on the TV without hearing how 'fat' we are and how to lose weight. On the morning talk shows the women are always talking about trying to lose weight and "Oh, no, I don't want to eat that!" Even the guests on these shows are always talking about how to lose weight. A few of the women who talk about this actually look anorexic. How about Natalie Moralis on the Today show?

-Women deferring to male opinion
-Women valuing male opinion in the first place

Advertising didn't create those problems - society did. Advertising merely enforces them.

Anorexia is a sickness is the mind. Celebrities can worsen it, but they can't necessarily cause it. It's a need to be perfect and in control.

Yup, keep sucking up. People aren't responsible for their own actions anymore, it's always the TV, or the magazine, or the Internet, or society. PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!!!!
