Plug and play means that you don't need to install any CDs or software to use the hardware you bought. Hardware like printers, cameras, scanners etc. Windows vista has plug and play I think.

Yoi_55 gave you the closest answer so far.
Plug and Play PnP means that your Operating System like Windows 2000 or Windows XP already has
drivers loaded that will allow your hardware to activate for use.
Formerly, you might have to attach the hardware, Reboot > and then use a CD for that piece of hardware and INSTALL the drivers from the CD
or INSTALL the drivers from an online site.

The drivers that you OS loads are the MOST compatible with that operating system, like XP, and are deemed "most stable"...
BUT that does not mean they are the BEST choice.
Often, the manufacturers drivers can make your hardware or software operate "faster".
IF not as stable, and you opt to use the mfg. drivers
then you "might" someday have to go to the mfg. site online and "update" the device driver...
but that's a GOOD thing.
Mfg's frequently like to keep their devices working well, and will "issue" new drivers, and make the download from the site FREE. So it's a win win deal.

Only YOU can decide if you want
to bet on the turtle or the rabbit.

Happy computing

Basically, it means that the drivers are already loaded in the operating system. It might or might not need to reboot the computer. Every version of Windows from 95 on supports PnP.
