, there is constant subliminal style images of people flashing up in background (i think one of them is marla) etc, and there is that scene of how tyler tampers with cinema clips so that porn clips are shown in other films, i was wondering if the images flashing up are just a gimic or do they hold any relevance or deeper meaning.

I thought it's a reflection on the narrator's confused sense of reality, where real world and the imaginary world blur into each other. The first time you actualy see Tyler is in one of these flashes

Brad Pitt's character is the alter-ego of Edward Norton's character. So, technically, Edward Norton is both of them. It's not that confusing really.

I think it's a mix of things - for some directors it's about shock value, for some it's meant to be putting out messages in a secret way and for others it's purely about the visual affect.
