I do the drive a lot from Ft. Lauderdale to Key Largo. It is about two and a half hours. From Key Largo the first key in the Keys, It takes another two hours (100 Miles) to reach Key West. If you decide to drive down the Keys. The Mile markers start at 100 in Key Largo, and as you drive they go all the way down to 0 in Key West, Hope that helps!

It is way more than three hours by car -- more like five -- even more if rush hours or weekends are involved. A car or minivan is really the best & cheapest way. If you want to fly & there is no connecting flight from FLL you can get to MIA via Tri-rail for about $5.00 a person. Outside baggage claim you ask someone for the Tri-rail shuttle stop. Haul your baggage there & wait until the bus takes you to the Tri-rail station. Take that to the MIA transfer stop & take another shuttle to the MIA terminal for your Key West flight. Give yourself at least two hours for the transfer -- then add MIA KW flight time.Tri-rail is a commuter service & doesn't run after about 9:30 pm to about 5:00 am. OR just book your flight straight thru connecting thru MIA. OR there's a limo service, Trans Florida Express that'll take you there (on a bus) for about $100 a person -- but not back. OR ride the dog.
