I know she has been nominated for Oscar for her role in the Spanish film "Volver". Does her character speak Spanish or English in the film? I thought that only English-speaking roles can be nominated for Oscar and only English-speaking films, too. Am I wrong about this? Thanks.

Amanda R, I didn't say I thought it was something wrong to nominate some role that is not in English, on the contrary. I was just surprised, as I know there is a particular category for English non-speaking films. Then I don't quite understand the meaning of this category? Or is it maybe a sub-category only?

She speaks Spanish, but it has subtitles. And why would you think that it has to be in english to be nominated? Many international films have won best picture, best screenplay, and much more in the past. Just because it may not have happened before, doesn't mean that it never will, watch the movie, see her performance, and then decide that it wasn't one of the most moving performances in film this year by a woman in a leading role. The only thing that matters in Oscar qualification is the following: That the movie play in at least a certain number of theatres for a certain number of weeks, after that, it's up to the Academy members to nominate the BEST. Half Nelson wasn't in nearly as many theatres as Pirates 2. But it was a more important film because of the subject matter and deep moving performances.
