Okay. What's the BEST solution? The system came pre-loaded with VISTA but no WORD or EXCEL and that's what I really need.
Is it possible to purchase those two items for the VISTA version and install them?

Partition the HD and you can run both XP and Vista. You will be prompted to choose which OS you want to have run @ startup.

"The system came pre-loaded with VISTA but no WORD or EXCEL and that's what I really need."

You should have asked this before in your original question! See, Word and Excel are separate from Vista. Vista is the OS on your computer. Word and Excel are programs. They are available for both Vista and XP. You really did *not* want to try and get XP running on your system.

"Is it possible to purchase those two items for the VISTA version and install them?"

Yes. Look into purchasing Microsoft Office. Office is the suite of applications that contains Word, Excel, and other programs.

No Vista and XP are two different versions of windows. You need to either partition your drive to have have both with the ability to accessed but you can't over lap them.

If you do partition your drive my suggestion is to use the Linux Gparted liveCD and do backwards compatibility meaning install window XP first then windows Vista.

Yes it is. Down load Microsofts Virtual PC 2007 and you can run multible OS's on the same PC. Microsoft knew that Vista would have more compatibility Issues than any other OS and provided this free download to combat it. go to Microsoft.com Q&A and download other freebies that might even aid you better. I have 3 OS's on my computer along with Vista

Yes, it certainly is. It is called a "dual boot". If you have a decent size hard drive, you can partition it, that is divide it, and be able to run either system, but not both at the same time.
It does, however, require a fair amount of knowledge/expertise and I do not recommend that for beginner computer users. If you consider yourself intermediate or advanced, you can try it.

No, Either partition the hard drive and run both, or format the hard drive, and install xp fresh, Good luck... Remember XP is suppose to be One Computer and One OS...
