I am building a computer. I need to buy the components. I want to build around an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor, 1GB dual channel memory and 160GB of hard drive. I plan on using Windows XP or possibly upgrade to Vista Premium. What brand of hardware components will work best with this set up, but will also be cost effective?

Don't worry, AMD and ATI Video Cards go great together...also if you are wanting to install RAM then go ahead and try Kingston brand, but at least 2 gigs worth if you are going any less than that go with Corsair brand. As for a hard drive I would recommend a Seagate, or Samsung if you want to go a little cheaper. ROMs? well Sony makes a great ROM and they are relatively inexpensive, but Samsung's ROMs are great too (DVD R-RW and CD R-RW). Soundblaster cards are always a winner with AMD and are cheap too. Stick with XP though you will have less problems...wait a little untill the bugs have been worked out. Good Luck!

AM2 or Socket 939?

Motherboard, Gigabyte, ASUS, or EFI, get a Mother board that's using Nvidia Nforce 5

Harddrive: go w/ at least 2x 200gbs configured in mirror raid using a Promise tx2300 raid card.

If planning on Vista, go w/ at least 2gb of memory Kingston, or Corsair
Video card, you want a PCI-E video card, *(so be sure you get a PCI-E motherboard, w/ most motherboards this is not so much an issue any more as most vendors have stopped making AGP anyway). Nvidia GPU (8000 family) XFX of BFG are good video card makers using the Nvidia chipset.

OR..just goto www.tomshardware.com to read what those guys have to say, and then goto www.newegg.com and read customer reviews on the products people buy etc..

Consider doing a dual boot with one of the many free, reliable and up to date operating systems. My favorite is UBUNTU.

You didn't say what it was primarily going to be used for,ie(Games,Office,Entertainment, or just in general.).The configs vary greatly depending on the intended use.(As does the price of components).Try here :-
