The kraken is a monster created from ancient Scandinavian folklore .
There was supposedly more than just the one "The Kracken" and they were all legendary sea monsters of gargantuan size, said to have dwelled off the coasts of Norway and Iceland.
The idea from the Kraken, though DID come from icelandic and other scandinavian fishers who sighted giant squids and octopuses (octopi?).
There are such things as 20+ foot long squids and octopi, by the way.
The word kraken is derived from the German word for octopus. Go figure !

Yes, and no. The legendary kraken is generally described as being of a monstrous size, but it is based on exaggerated reports of evidence of the actual giant squid.

It's a biggie! Giant squids or colossal squids are thought by some to be the basis of such legends as the kraken and other "sea monsters".

actually!!! they have beaks the size of an enormous parrot which will overwhelm bones. they have thousands of thousands of little tooth on their suction-cups alongside their tentacles...they don't look some thing to debris with! BTW, there is an probability of a human encountering them - great squid (6-8 ft) are pulled up at the same time as fishing in Mexico for all time and the fishermen gained't enable then on the boat because they're so risky. imagine what a important squid would do.

giant squids only grow to the size of some 10 to 15 meters, but then again, the bigger ones might have existed some centuries ago and are extinct nowadays... those were the source of legends.
Or maybe they still live somewhere and we just haven't seen them yet.
But yes, I believe it is the same animal.
