That is the time travel paradox.

Most people believe that should time travel ever become possible; that the person would not actually go back to the past; but the past in an alternative dimension or universe.

About 10-11 years ago there was a series called Time Trax and people went to the past of an alternate dimension,

As one of the people that captured (and offed) John Titor I can offer expert advice about this situation. When you travel backwards in time you do *not* emerge on the exact identical quantum time-line that you left from. You will be killing only one of the bazillions of mothers that you haved (have and had). While this would effect other you's, the mother on your original quantum time-line would still be intact. Keep in mind that you have actually already done this since I already loaned you the Z particle based time machine that we stole from John Titor. You're still here aren't you? Of course you aren't really here anymore since this is a different quantum time-line than the one you originally left from!

Time travel, though an interesting idea and fun to muse about in Sci - fi would be impossible because of Paradox. Because in Theroy you could meet yourself in the past or future wich would change your past or future and may cause you to rethink your decision to ever travel through time in the first place, hence the past catches back up to the present or future thus creating a paradox which can not exist. Clear as mud? Good... Now you see the problem. --- Basically, if you went back in time to kill your mother, and succeeded, then you would not exist, therefore in the future (( after you were born)) you could not have gone back in time in the first place to kill your mother, thus you wouldn't and couldn't kill her in the first place. Ah the beauty of Paradox.

I assume you mean before your birth.

You would have created a paradox.

More specifically, a Grandfather Paradox: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandfather_paradox

Due to the nature of this entire thing being circular logic.

According to some science fiction novelists, a rift in time would be created because of the extreme impossiblity of everything involved.

It's also entirely possible that the Universe itself would prevent you from doing so, because the past is, in its very nature, not alterable. The past cannot change.

You would find that your mom had also traveled back in time and spanked the h*ll out of you for being so naughty!

Well if you stayed in that other time (the past) you would be tried and convicted of murder ,so you would disappear after awhile because of the death penalty you would have to face and in real-time,yes, you would not be here, either way you would be doomed.

you would not be able to return to this time period, but you would exist in the past-theoretically...

Carl Sagan had a show on PBS called Cosmos back in the 80's they re-run it on discovery science... there was an episode where he explains it. I believe it was episode 8 "journeys in space & time"

You would cease to exit. Along with any siblings you may have and the course of that continued history would be irrevocable changed.

You would find that you existed but didn't exist at the same time. It's horrible. Believe me, you don't want to try it. It makes your brains hurt like crazy.
