I live on the West Coast right now. But I would love to move to Boston and land a job as an A&P mechanic fixing 747s. How is the housing market in Boston right now? What are the people like? Are they friendly like me?

the cost of living is pretty high here in new england. but we all seem to manage lol. i cant imagine living anywhere else. im not crazy about the cold but overall i like having 4 seasons. there are rude ppl here, but most ppl are nice. i have heard california is a lot worse than massachusetts as far as cost of living and rude stuck-up ppl. you should come visit in spring or fall to see if you like it here.

Other than the housing market you need to think about the weather. Boston is fiercely cold in the winter. I've lived in the Northern East Coast life my whole life, and I have visited the West Coast several times and the people on the West Coast are much much friendlier than anyone on the East Coast. Why not going to Boston for a couple days (now would be a great time because it's winter and you could see how cold it really is) and check out the people, housing etc.

Boston is amazing. Granted, I'm born and bred - but I've traveled the world and not found a better place to live. We are passionate about our weather, our sports teams, and our alcohol. We like people who laugh, but who can also understand our frustrations with life. We'll go out any night of the week and not talk about work. There is always something to do, but when there is nothing, we have fun then too. Its a small city, you can walk everywhere you need to go downtown, and easily get to interesting places via public transportation. There are two major airports, and many smaller airports (Logan, Providence, Manchester, Plymouth, etc.) within easy driving distance, so your professional choice shouldn't be a problem.

We do have four drastic seasons - very, very cold in the winter, mud in the spring, with glorious days mixed in, hot summers, and falls that mix hot and cold in an amazing way.

You need to visit before you move here. If you are in LA, you'll be amazed at the smallness of the actual city of Boston. If you are in San Fran, I bet you would feel at home here. San Diego, you might be surprised at the weather change. Come here, hang out somewhere other than Cheers, and you'll meet some locals who will tell you how it is!

You do not say where you live on the west coast. If it is S.F. you'll be right at home in Boston (actually you should consider it Boston and Cambridge) and there is actually more variations and interesting places within 200 miles than in S.F. (although far fewer vineyards and mountains not more than half the height).
Same thing if you are in Portland (and the ME namesake - a beautiful place and like in OR full of great micro-breweries - is only 90 minutes away from Boston). Boston more enjoyable but also a bit more insular thn L.A. But what most trips me about your question: I am not aware of any airline having a maintenance center in Boston or anywhere else in New England.

I moved to Boston from Los Angeles about 10 years ago. I knew nothing of Boston before. Overall, I love the city. It is completely different than the west coast. Here are some thoughts:
- I found the people friendly, but then I realized I was meeting mostly people from somewhere else
- Native Bostonians are fairly insular, but once you are friends you're friends for life.
- Housing is more expensive here, and older, but far more charming
- I live in the city, which is a much more vital vibe than the burbs in L.A.
- There are indeed little taxes and fees that they don't have out west, but it's not a killer
- The weather has four actual seasons, and you need to buy the wardrobe accordingly, but it is fantastic to watch the trees turn in the fall and then bloom in the spring
- There is plenty to do here, and a strong civic spirit, something I never ever noticed in the west.

If you're in doubt, come visit Boston in the spring - like April or May - and see what you think.

Good luck!

PS - email me if you have specific questions. I'd be glad to help you out.

I had a long distance relationship when i was in college. It was really tough but we made it. We are now married and expecting our second baby. It can work out. However, if you are at a point where you feel like unless you are together, you can't continue on with the relationship then you should end it. Distance is very hard, but if you're meant to be together you would survive the distance. If moving to be near each other is the only way to save your relationship, I would not do it. Moving to further your relationship, or to strenghten it is a different issue, but moving to prevent ending it is not a good idea. That is just my opinion, and obviously there is much more to the situation than what you could write in your question. Hopefully you will make the right decision. Good luck!!

Housing in Boston is expensive (as it is in most of New England). That being said you could always live in the suburbs and pay a bit less. As far as the people they are I think a bit more friendly than people in any other big city. I tend to find that the people in Boston are pretty easy going.

Incidentally when I was there I attended the Park Street Church (located right next to Boston Common) and I recommend it for Sunday services to anyone staying in Boston :).

They are okay as long as you are not driving!!!! It is cold there in the winter and the housing is very expensive but may not seem to you if you live on the west coast now.....as a city it is great...I live in the next state up, cheaper and safer (maine) but no jobs.

Boston is one of the greatest cities in North America to live in. One of its nicknames is "The Athens of America", also another is "The Hub of the Universe."
