my screen goes black with thin line in middle from side to side, I pump the monitor or desk and it clears up. Is my monitor about to just stop? This happens sometimes when it sits idle or when I'm actually using it.

A 'thin white line' is because the horizontal deflection is working , but the VERTICLE deflection is not.
Yes, your monitor is about to die - but IF you know how to fix it you can save it. However, your asking the question means you are not qualified to open the case
- DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE -
you could turn it off, let it sit 5 min, unplug it, then open it & look for loose connections or bad solder joints; a qualified tech can do this for you better.
Check the price - might be cheaper to replace.

Does this happen when you are not moving the mouse or typing? If so, the monitor is just going to sleep to conserve energy. You can change this setting by opening Control Panel then Power Options, then the "Turn Off Monitor" setting.

change the displays resolution. make it a wide screen and it will eliminate the bars. typically 1280x720, 1920x1080, or1920x1200. some HDTVs will require you to put the computer input as HDMI or it'll assume you want only a 3:4 screen type. that was the case with my dad's Sony Bravia HDTV. with VGA it was stuck with a square-ish display, in HDMI mode it allowed a full screen 1920x1200 resolution.
