I usually see this among the asian community and I can't understand why people do this and what purpose it serves. Surely the CD would be better off in the CD player and not hanging from the rear view mirror.

esp because they spin around as the car moves and with the sun glaring down it could blind you and cause you to crash!!! as if asians arent bad enough drivers as it is!
although, some people hang them places they dont want birds to be. so maybe they put them there to keep birds from pooping on their windsheild? either way...id rather have bird sh!t on my window than my brains.

It's probably an old damaged CD that can't be played any more. Some people just like hanging pretty things on the mirror.

That perplexes me as well! That and when people have dream catchers in their cars. (??) I always wanna ask them if they do a lot of sleeping while they're driving. The only reason I can come up with is that it was a cd someone gave them and it was so bad that they figured it would make a better sun catcher. Or maybe there's a big scratch on it and it won't play anymore.. I don't get it.

I never did get into doing that; besides, my rear view mirror divorced and left my car a couple of years back...

This was on Mythbusters (show on Discovery channel)
but it's widely believed that the refraction of light from the CD in the window will screw up a speed radar reading.
It doesn't. Myth busted!

Its a Red Neck Thing Blind Can't afford the sparkly glass ornament disk scracthed hang it, kind of like the old tires on the fence post.

I have heard many reasons why, but not if they are true or not. I heard that if you are speeding and a cop uses his speed detector thing, it reflects off of it, messing up the machine, which many people believe is true, but isn't. Also, I think that people use them for style.

I think they are doing it to be "cool". But let me tell you what I hate...being the car next to them at the red light, the sun is beaming off of this cd into my eyes and I can't see. I just want to throw something at their car!

I think it has something to do with speed camera lasers bounce off or something like that.....So the person breaking the law can't get caught
