Despite some of the speculation that has abounded in some of the responses, the problem was that Tom Cruise had a low sperm count.
His 1st ex-wife, Mimi Rogers who was rather bitter blew the lid off that story when they got divorced because he had made her feel as if the problem had been hers. She got pregnant less than a year after the divorce.
Nicole Kidman miscarried once. and that was a few weeks after Tom Cruise filed for divorce

Nicole was pregnant by Tom a few times but suffered miscarriages.They finally decided to adopt.

Think they were having difficulty in concieving, i think that was the major factor in Tom asking for a divorce, cause he's definatly not shooting blanks, so it must have been a problem nicole is having.. they both really wanted children together.. i guess tom didnt want to wait any longer, and he wanted a young breeding machine aka kati holmes

I remember hearing that Cruise couldn't have kids of his own which is why him and first wife mimi rogers divorced and he and Nicole adopted. Then Katie ended up pregnant and now I don't know. Maybe suri was a gift from zenu

Nicole Kidman was sited in magazines saying that she didn't want to give birth but rather adopted, mostly for her physcial image and career

I don't think anyone knows the answer except Nicole and Tom. It's their decision on either if they want to or not have kids and no one elses.

Nicole was concerned that she would ruin her perfect figure if she had her own children. Adopting was the next best thing.

Tom couldn't have kids. He couldn't have kids with his first wife either. So maybe Kate got a sperm implant. I'm surprised some news reporters haven't really dug into Tom about that.
