Last year we dressed my son up as the gingerbread man. I got a large cardoard box, flattened it out drew round him and cut it out. I then made a mask using a large dinner plate and cut out the eyes and mouth and attatched elastic.Then we just decorated it with buttons etc. It was simple but effective. This year we're doing a similar thing with Humpty Dumpty. It doesn't say anywhere that Humpty was a boy and a gingerbread girl could look quite cute. Other ideas from last year that his friends dressed up as Mulan, Snow White, Little Miss Muffet, Pocahontas. Disney Princesses!!, Rapunzel.

This is digging a bit deep (but I'm a fairytale nut) - in the Two King's Children, by the Brothers Grimm, the Queen gives her daughter 3 dresses: one is midnight blue - like the evening sky, one is as silver as the stars, and one is golden as the sun. The princess uses these dresses to win back her lover, who has been bewitched to forget her.
