False - in sections where the trail was new (not an Indian trail previously) and only wide enough for a single wagon, it was often only a wagon width wide, But where the trail set out from Missouri, the wagon trail moved in a horizontal line rather than a straight one. This meant that the wagons covered a lot more of the territory and could see what was happening. It also meant more food for their livestock as otherwise the trains were all covering the same ground and depleting all the game and grass.
