If you would abort this pregnancy if anything came back +, because you don't want a child with special needs then take the test. But if you have every intention of having this child regardless then don't take it.
I am pregnant with my 5th child and 33 years old, I have never opted to take the test because it wouldn't matter what the results are.

I'm 21, 30 wks pregnant with my first. I refused the triple screen blood test. I told the doctor that if it did come back high risk, that I wouldn't get the amniocentesis because of the risk of miscarriage, so there was no point in getting worried. The results of the test would have had no bearing on my pregnancy, so I figured there was no point. I'd rather have a baby with Down syndrome than no baby at all.

Also, there is a high rate of inaccurate results with the blood test. My husband's aunt was told everything was fine, and that there was no need for the amnio. Her daughter was born with Down syndrome. We just decided that all the test would do was worry us, and cause stress I didn't need during my pregnancy. I have a degree in special education, so if our daughter is born with something wrong with her, I feel that I am fairly well prepared to deal with it.

If you think that you would abort because of a disability, or would need the time to prepare yourself to raise a child with a disability, it might be a good idea to get the tests. Otherwise, I think it's just one more thing to worry about.

I definitely would have it done....I have in the past and I would again.....If there is a problem with the baby whether it be down syndrome or something else you really need to be prepared....Down syndrome is not just a mental disability it is also linked to heart problems, bowel problems and other things....even if you would keep the baby you need to know before hand so you could have a surgeon on hand when the baby is born in case he/she needs immediate heart surgery as many many down syndrome babies do......True that there are some false positives but further screening would be done....I got pregnant in 2006 and had all these tests done..they came back on the high end but they still told me I was only at a 1% risk of having a down syndrome baby....I decided to go for an amnio and sure enough the baby had down syndrome and never made it full term.....had all kinds of problems.....I think it is wonderful that you would keep the baby ( I would do the same) but you need to know these things so you are prepared for this child...Good Luck!

I'm 23 and 26 weeks along now. My family and I decided against it because we dont' have a family history of down syndrome and to be honest, if something does occur, I'd rather not stress out about it throughout my pregnancy. My fiance and I discussed our options if something unfortunate were to happen, and now we're just leaving it in the hands of fate for now. When I told my doctor my decision, he was impressed with the concern and logic I had placed within this matter and then told me didn't really like AFP tests! But it's entirely up to you what you'd rather do!

I did and wished that I hadn't. Our test came back with a big red ABNORMAL stamped on it and I about passed out. We went for genetic counseling and a level 3 ultra sound.(to see how his heart was developing.) I refused the amnio. Everything was FINE!! He was 9lbs and 1 oz. I freaked out for nothing. I would never put myself through that again. The choice is yours though. Talk to your doctor to see if you are high risk for anything. Go from there. Good luck!!

My daughters who are both pregnant decided against having the test because they are alot of false positives and they didn't think that the worry was worth it because they decided if they have a baby with these disabilities they would love it the same.

I'm 27 with my first and I just got one a few days ago. The risks aren't as high since we're still young. But, I wanted to go ahead and get it just for a little peace of mind.
