Can anyone help me with this problem?

Sam is making belts to sell at the local craft fair. He uses a set of three designs that are repeated on each belt. The first design is 2 1/2 inches long. The second design is 1 1/4 inches long. The third design is 1 5/8 inches long.

Will the set of three designs fit onto a 5 inch segment of belt?

This is a least common denominator question. You need to get the fractions to have a common denominator. This isn't too hard. The common denominator will be 8. So, it turns the question into 2 4/8 inches, 1 2/8 inches, and 1 and 5/8 inches. Add them up to get 4 11/8 inches, or 5 3/8 inches total. So no, the three patterns will not fit on a 5 inch segment of belt.

The length of the three designs summed will be:

2 1/2 + 1 1/4 + 1 5/8 = 5/2 + 5/4 + 13/8 = 43/8 = 5 3/8 inches.

Since the segment is only 5 inches, no they will not fit.

add the three lengths of the designs and see if the sum is less or greater than 5
the sum is 2 1/2 + 1 1/4 + 1 5/8
this will give 5 3/8
therefore the designs will not fit.
You can use a calculator to get this answer or find the common denominator.

No! They won't fit in a 5 inch segment, because their total length is 5 and 3/8 inches. Just add them up.

2.500 + 1.250 + 1.625 = 5.375 = 5 + 3/8

To the responder who thought the questioner used the wrong word, I believe that the questioner was using a pun, since belts go around the 'waist' not the 'waste.'

No:

2½ = 2 4/8; 1¼ = 1 2/8; 1 ⅝:

Total = 5⅜

(Waisting away is a play on words - 'belt'...'waist' ..!!)
