Its supposed to be about Rock and Roll and talks about the death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens The Big Bopper in a plane crash.

Years after the original recordings, McLean said in 2000:

«The song starts off with my memories of the death of Buddy Holly. But it moves on to describe America as I was seeing it and how I was fantasizing it might become, so it's part reality and part fantasy but I'm always in the song as a witness or as even the subject sometimes in some of the verses.»

This is about the death of Buddy Holly. "The Day The Music Died" is February 3, 1959, when Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper were killed in a plane crash after a concert. McLean wrote the song from his memories of the event. The Beatles Sgt. Pepper album was a huge influence, and McLean has said in numerous interviews that the song represented the turn from innocence of the '50s to the darker, more volatile times of the '60s - both in music and politics.
McLean was a paperboy when Holly died. He learned about the plane crash when he cut into his stack of papers and saw the lead story.

The song 'American Pie' by Don McLean is a tribute to the deaths of three of his favorite musicians...Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper. When those three great musicians passed away in that plane crash that was, "the day the music died" for him.

There is a cool article on the song on Wikipedia. If you love the song, you're going to love the article.

Although the writer of the song, Don McLean, would never actually tell you what the song meant, most believe it is about the plane crash where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died. And the majority of the song is about significant events in the 1960's.

Pockety is 100% correct. McLean has never come out and said just what the song means, but the common feeling is that it's about significant events that happened in his life, one of which was the day Buddy Holly died, or "the day the music died."
