There was a truck maker called Autocar(over 110 years old) that made custom-built heavy-duty trucks mainly for the construction induastries(cement mixers, dump trucks), but gradually expanded into the logging industry...

About(almost) fifty years ago, White Motor Company(another truck maker) took over Freightliner, then sold off Freightliner to Daimler-Benz(aka Mercedes-Benz) US operations in the late 1980s...

But White Motor was in trouble finacially, so it merged w/ GMC's Truck and Bus Division, then merged(again), this time w/ Volvo's truck operations in the early 1990s...and that included Autocar as well...

WhiteGMC Heavy Truck Corporation was around for a few more years(as VolvoGM trucks), but Renault Industrial Vehicles wanted to enter the U.S. and Canadian markets, so the US Government ordered Volvo to sell off its now-failing-and-almost-dead Autocar division...

Autocar has been independent of Volvo/Renault's truck division for at least five years...at that time, Autocar was making only the old-style White/Volvo RoadXpeditor Series 3(strictly for trash trucks), and does so to this day...this design, however, will be discontinued in about three years(reportedly) as the "new" Autocar Xpeditor Series 4 will incorporate a futuristic cab design...

Unfortunately, Renault is trying to steal some of Autocar's fame by selling a similar cab-and-chassis model once originally made for a few years(1982-90?) by American LaFrance(the firetruck maker);this C&C model is used mainly by USA Waste(former name of Waste Management...

HTH...

WHAT???...you DON'T like my answer???...well, it's appropriate for a question like this...besides, I'm a true car buff!!!...

BigMonty's right!...100% right!

Autocar was a unit of White Motor Company even through the mergers w/ GMC and Volvo, but now just s truggling to get more trash companies(and cities) interested in their Xpeditor Series 3 cab-and-chassis trucks...

Thanks for that update...
