Not to be too nit-picky but we are a democratic-republic. That means that the large group elects the small group to rule in their stead.

"Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.... If the next centennial does not find us a great nation ... it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces."
James Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, 1877

Technically speaking, we were never a true Democracy. If this was the case, all citizens would have to vote on all laws, etc. The fact that we elect people to represent us should tell you we aren't a TRUE democracy, but a similar style.... A democratic republic....

Go out and vote if you think young people are apathetic. Call your Congressperson.... Don't just gripe about laws YOUR VOTED representative voted for.

No, corporations largely direct public policies. Do you realize that corporations have a life of their own?

Corporations can live many times longer than the persons who created them. The by-laws and corporate policy largely control how the people act and their business ethics, or lack thereof.

President Bush is largely controlled by Oil Corporations. You can't point to one person and say they are in control of those corporations. But without a doubt, he steps to their tune.

What to do about it?

Please help to establish a large, diverse, & representative ethical oversight committee for managing the National Security Agency (NSA)

The National Security Agency (NSA) by necessity currently collects information from ALL organizations without representative ethical oversight. This includes the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, National Guard, ALL Political Representatives, FEMA, Greenpeace, the Medical Community, Insurance Companies, Research Groups, domestic or abroad, ...

Unfortunately, special interest groups not representing All Americans currently have access to direct and use Confidential data collection; which affects everyone, not just the US. Imagine large corporations influencing the prosperity of businesses based upon racial criteria; the NSA makes this possible.

The NSA currently does not have a system (people and software) to parse the great amounts of information available to create prioritized situational awareness for the benefit of "representative ethical oversight". Imagine a corporation influencing all that is associated with a University research project, to force access, or force a sale of intellectual property at a significantly lower cost. Now expand the ability of this corporation to influence all businesses, everywhere.

Please support my initiative to establish a large and diverse representative ethical oversight committee for monitoring and managing the NSA.

Fortunately, it never was. You need to learn some history and study a little bit about the country. Especially since the story you linked is about liberty and not "democracy". Start here:

Umm, the article you posted deals with Dancing on Bars in NYC. Maybe, when you wake up, you shouldn't smoke a joint first thing....

Our government's functioning has not changed since Clinton was in office, Clinton was involved in wars and people died too. And who's doing the killing? We're trying to stop suicide bombers, is it wrong to target them? They target innocents!

Nope, never was. It was always a Federal Republic. What's going to be lost to mass apathy is our industrial economic base. Our politicians are so busy serving their corporate masters, they forgot they were elected to be pubic servants.

It's a Republic, NOT a democracy, but even that is being destroyed by Washington.
