You might want to look at the reviews from either of these sites:

http://sewing.patternreview.com/...

http://www.epionions.com/

The first reviews a lot of sewing items. The second reviews a ton of computer products including sewing machines. Both rely on real customers to make the reviews.

You might look at Target for the Euro Pro machine that can monogram if all you need to do is letters and numbers. http://tinyurl.com/3dfzf8

Or look at the Brother 270D if you want to machine embroider as well as monogram. http://www.brother-usa.com/homesewing/product_cat.aspx?cat=sew_emb Walmart carries them.

The Brother sewing machine at WalMart under $200 comes with a quilting foot and is a computer on board model. I own seven machines and the Brother is a charming easy to use 50+ built in stitches and easy to learn with easy read manual. Monogramming is don e by lowering dog feed and placing fabric on embroidery hoops. Pin on monogram letter and set for a satin stitch, you move the hoop to make the shape as you go.

Husqvarna has the mega quilter. Has a longer bed for machine quilting. They also sell a frame the machine can mount that operates just like a long arm. I take the easy way out. I use the embroidery unit to machine quilt. This gives me the custom quilting I desire. Husqvarna owner for close to 20 years. The biggest advantage is the dealer is 15 miles away. I still get free lessons which were included with my purchase. Also can't beat the customer service when the machine decides to nuts, It has to be the machine It could not possibly be the user. Bernina also has a stitch regulator on their newer machines which is great for free motion quilting. All i can stress is buy local and use the support service.
