In Pride and Prejudice, etc. two people who are hostile to each other are masking some kind of secret love. Does this happen in real life? My male friend and I are recently acquainted and clearly mutually attracted, but we have never really discussed this due to both of us having kind of messy personal situations. We make strange excuses to see each other, pretending there's some thing he/I need help with etc. We have recently begun bickering, and not about trivial things. It's more like a direct attack on each other's character. No really hurtful words are used, just "You seem to think everyone has something wrong with them," or "You're rude," things like that. We also seem to express irritation with each other frequently. I know this is not really media-worthy but it's weird because I don't usually hang out with people who insult me, and whom I insult, so early in the acquaintanceship. Is this normal repressed love-behaviour or just normal hostility?

Yup, that's how it usually works. If this person was just a 'buddy' to you, and you never felt any sort of spark or tension, then no.
But there's something going on here. You're already fighting like a couple... you'll probably BE a couple soon, if you allow yourselves to be...

hm... I kind of have the same problem. Me and my best friend bicker all the time and there have been moments when we've almost told each other about our feelings for each another, but in the end we always chicken out. As to not ruin our friendship, or maybe her not wanting to admit being gay, i'm not sure. But I feel more and more frustrated every day and it always leads to us fighting constantly. The other day one of our mutual friends told us "you guys really dislike each other don't you? Either that or you love each other."

Personally I think that you guys have something there, maybe if you don't feel like talking to him about it you could show him? Like the next time you see him say nice things to him, and don't answer when he insult you. That might throw him off his guard. You never know what might happen =)! good luck!

Best of buddies often turn to best bed buddies!
It's good that you two have such open and honest communication, and in the long run, it will probably work out for the best!
