You already have answers as to where is Troy, Turkey is the correct answer. The Trojan War as described in Homer's Iliad is a legend probably based on fact (conflicts between Dorian and Ionian Greeks), although the existence of Achilles, Helen, Paris and the rest is mythical. The site of Troy was discovered by Heinrich Schliemman in the 19th Century. Among the contestants on the "Greek" side, Sparta, never developed a navy of the size described in the book, and of the city-states of Greece few were seagoing. The Anatolian peninsula where Turkey is now, was in the antiquity home to the Hittite Empire and later to Ionian Greek settlers among others.

I don't know if the Troy battle was a mith or if it really happened (but I think that it was real) the only thing that I'm sure that is completely sure is that Brad Pitt looked extravagantly gorgeous in that move, nobody else would never look better! ;)

Yes, I saw the movie and it is an hour and some odd minutes I of my life I will never get back. :-P I'm a classical studies major and I was NOT happy with the movie. I wanted my ten years of war, my gods fighting amoung mortals, my Casandra, and Achillies is supposed to die before the Trojan Horse!!

Anyway, yes, Troy existed near the modern day city of Truva. It was "discovered", because the local inhabitance knew the ruins were there, by Heinrich Schliemann in the late 1800s. The ruins are available for tour groups to visit and is not guarded as heavily as sites likes Pompeii, mainly because it has been looted to the point of only the buildings remain.

Troy is now in Turkey. Yes, there is an actual excavation there. Heinrich Schliemann was an arachaeologist who discovered the ruins in the early part of the 20th Century. Google for images of the gorgeous gold headdress he found that was (possibly) worn by Helen or another royal family member.
