While there are many cartoony pictures of monkeys swinging from their tails (known as prehensile tails), there are only 4 kinds of monkeys that do this: Howling monkeys, spider monkeys, woolly monkeys, and muriquis. These guys have pads on the bottom of their tails that helps them grip. Capuchins also can do some hanging, but do not have as great of tails as the others, they lack the padding (this is called semi prehensile).
The tails make moving in the trees easier. it can be an extra "hand" to hold on to branches with, it can help hold on to branches in storms, and it helps them reach food at the end of trees better. They can hang from stable branches and reach food on other branches that cannot hold their weight.
Most monkeys do not have prehensile tails. Their tails are mostly used for balance.

Some monkeys have what is called a prehensile tail. It is like an extra appendage, it helps the monkey grasp branches while he looks for food, he uses it for balance while up in the trees moving around.

They don't have curly tails. They wrap it around branch of a tree for better balance. Its like the fifth arm.

Some (not all) new world primates (south america) have prehensile tails to aid movement in trees. It acts like a 5th limb. As far as i am aware, no old world primates (Africa) have this adaptation
