I was chipping away the ice in the freezer with a knife and a hammer when I must have poked a hole in the pastic because air started shooting out of this little hole. It was odorless and colorless. Is this freon, and is it serious? I unplugged it but it didn't stop. It won't explode or anything, will it? Will my food still be ok after that air or gas stops coming out? Can the fridge be salvaged?

Worse thing you can do is take a knife to a freezer. Yep, sounds like you punctured a freon line. It won't explode. Food will be ok, but you better find another cold spot for it, it won't stay cold in that refrigerator for long. You need a service man or a new cold box asap. The unit you have may be old and not worth fixing. It's your call on that.

Yep, you poked a hole in the refrigerant line. It can be repaired, either by brazing or with a special epoxy repair cement, but it will need a filter-drier installed in the line to absorb any moisture that may be in the system. It will need to have a vaccuum pulled on it, and charged with the correct amount of the propoer refrigerant.

Have a pro do it, don't even try to FIY.

It won't work as well now that you have perforated the lining... It will have to be replaced eventually.

Hey Matt... I owe you an apology for your last question. You were right, I was a jerk. In reading over my stupid answer to your Puerto Rican question yesterday. I realized that I was defensive and jumped the gun and judged you a little too harsh. You have to understand... There are so many idiots on here making stupid comments... I didn't even finish reading it before I judged you. Sorry... It is a legitimate question.

I asked a friend of mine from the Islands and she told me that older natives usually refuse to learn to speak English and younger people learn it in the Universities and as a second language just like we learn Spanish here. Hope that helps as it's from the horses mouth!

I don't apologize too often, but I felt badly and wanted you to know I realize I was a jerk. Sorry... Have nice day!

You can buy a patch kit for this thing. Then you would need to recharge it with R410 or whatever gas was in there. You can buy R410 at any Walmart and the Repair kit is sold at any Appliance store for about $5. Charge it until the frost is gone and it appears coldest Do not over charge, that will make it not cool as much, Remember , least charge without a freeze is coldest.

I agree with the answer above, if I were you I would get a refrigerator that doesn't have to be defrosted.
