Respect has great importance in everyday life. As children we are taught (hopefully) to respect our parents, teachers, and elders, school rules and traffic laws, family and cultural traditions, other people's feelings and rights, our country's flag and leaders, the truth and people's differing opinions. We develop great respect for people we consider exemplary and lose respect for those we discover to be clay-footed, and so we may try to respect only those who are truly worthy of our respect. We may also come to believe that, at some level, all people are worthy of respect.

For short, respect is a psychological construct involving the interaction, both perceived and expressed, in relationships between individuals.

Nah, you should be polite to people even if you dont like the person no matter what. Respect is earned throughout experiences with a person or by percieving their actions and deciding that they are a good person. Respect is also knowing when to shutup.

it depends on what you are referencing. To respect someone is to see them in a high regard. I respect professors, my dad, etc. Someone that tells you that you need to respect them usually does not need respect unless they are referring to personal space. Respect can take on many different meanings.
